SEOUL, May 23 (Korea Bizwire) — Newly proposed measures by the government to improve the current student grading system in South Korean high schools will be revealed in July by the Ministry of Education.
Although high school transcripts are as important as the college scholastic test in the college entrance process, there is lack of public trust in the system.
The ministry hopes to remedy this situation by making the grading system more objective and fair.
Education officials revealed yesterday the creation of a consortium that will staff and operate a civic policy committee to deal with the pending issue.
The committee will be composed of 100 individuals including students, parents, teachers, college officials and normal citizens who do not belong to any of the aforementioned categories.
The ministry said that committee members will be selected from all socio-economic backgrounds regardless of gender, age and region of origin.
Newly selected committee members will participate in a workshop set to take place next month, before coming up with a proposal on revamping the school grading system following a meeting in early July.
In addition, the Ministry of Education is planning to carry out online surveys targeting 10,000 people including high school students, parents, teachers and college officials.
The government’s final proposal is expected to reflect both the committee’s views and the online polls.
Professionals in the education sector say that as the current college entrance system has been criticized for over ten years, a new grading system that can objectively record students’ behavioral results is necessary.
Such a system would be also help to decrease costs going towards private education that many parents feel is essential to give their children an advantage in the current system.
An official at the Ministry of Education promised that the deliberation process would be “fair” as “there would be no meaning for deliberation if both the process and the results were not objective and fair.”
