SEOUL, March 18 (Korea Bizwire) – An ex-convict was involved in a lengthy car chase as he attempted to avoid a drunk driving roadblock, and was finally caught after colliding with a police patrol car. Although the man only drank one cup of beer, his actions have resulted in criminal charges.
On March 17, Gangdong Police Station in Seoul announced that the police detained the ex-convict surnamed Nam on the charge of interference with a government official in the execution of his duties, as the suspect drove away from the drunk driver checkpoint before colliding with the police car.
On the night of March 9, Nam turned his car and fled after seeing a police checkpoint in Dunchon-dong, southeastern Seoul. Police chased him, but Nam employed evasive maneuvers to escape, before finally hitting the patrol car.
The suspect was finally captured by police captured after a 13 km car chase. Ironically, his blood alcohol content (BAC) was only 0.009 percent, far less than the legal limit of 0.05 percent. Nam is known to have requested favorable arrangements after the arrest.
An official at the police agency said, “It seemed that Nam, who was released from a prison a short while ago, tried to escape the drunken driver crackdown for fear of returning to prison.”
