SEOUL, July 7 (Korea Bizwire)Gaming monitors are gaining popularity as more people are playing video games at home following the coronavirus outbreak.

TrendForce, a market intelligence provider, estimated that shipments of gaming monitors will reach 12.2 million units worldwide this year, which is 37 percent more than last year.

As Sony and Microsoft plan to release new models of the PlayStation and Xbox for the first time in seven years by the year’s end, the gaming monitor market is being hyped up more than ever.

Samsung Electronics Co. recently released its Odyssey G7 and G9, 1000R curved monitors boasting a 240 Hz scan rate.

LG Electronics Inc., after releasing the new UltraGear gaming monitors with ultrafast response last March, plans to release a new 2020 model by the end of this year.

A boost in the popularity of gaming monitors represents an opportunity for display makers.

For LG Display Co., which is dominating the in-plane switching (IPS) panel market alongside China’s BOE, increased sales of gaming monitors that come with IPS panels may work as an advantage.

TrendForce forecasts that IPS panel monitors, comprising 7 percent of the market share in the gaming monitor industry in 2019, will grow to take up 25 percent of the market by 2020.
