SEOUL, April 14 (Korea Bizwire)Installing charging devices for electric vehicles (EV) at gas stations will become easier as early as August of this year.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced new legislation that lowers the explosion prevention standards of EV chargers installed at gas stations.

After collecting ideas from the public and an evaluation from the Ministry of Government Legislation, the new bill is expected to take effect in August or September.

According to current regulations, EV chargers installed at gas stations are required to have features to prevent explosions. Meeting the standards, which were established in 2013, is often difficult due to the financial burden that falls on manufacturers. As a result, the number of EV chargers at gas stations has remained stagnant.

The new bill allows for the installation of chargers without explosion prevention features if they are a certain distance away from the gas pumps.

Officials at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy commented that they aggressively tackled the problems with the current regulations, and made sweeping gestures to improve the standards. They hope to resolve a large part of the difficulties the industry was facing through the new legislation.
