YONGIN, June 21 (Korea Bizwire) – June 21 marks World Giraffe Day. It was first initiated in 2014 by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation with the intention to “raise support, create awareness and shed light on the challenges giraffes face in the wild”.
To mark the occasion, a zoo in Yongin, Everland Lost Valley, has arranged special treats for its giraffes today.
Although giraffes are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as ‘Least Concern’, they have been extirpated from much of their former habitat, including Eritrea, Guinea, Mauritania, and Senegal. Three subspecies, the West African giraffe, Rothchild giraffe, and Nubia giraffe, are classified as ‘Endangered’.
