ICHEON, Jul. 31 (Korea Bizwire) — The British “virtual band” Gorillaz and Japan’s RADWIMPS impressed tens of thousands on the last day of the Jisan Valley Rock Music & Arts Festival, one of South Korea’s biggest summer outdoor music festivals.
Known most in Korea for its music in the hit Japanese animation film “Your Name.,” RADWIMPS kicked off its hourlong set with two tracks from the film’s OST, “Your Name.” and “Zenzenzense,” on Sunday.
“Hello, everyone. We are from Japan!” shouted guitarist Kuwahara Kira to the roaring crowd.
The mosh pit in front of the stage went berserk around the 30-minute mark when “Dada,” the band’s 2011 metal-rap track, blasted out of the speakers. Seen were members of The Koxx, a South Korean indie band that performed at the event the day before, head banging amongst the crowd.
Following the Japanese act, the South Korean band Jaurim, which means “purple rain forest,” took control of the crowd. Singer Kim Yoon-ah, dressed in a long, glittery golden dress, fired water at fans from a water pistol throughout the show.
The four-member act, which has enjoyed mainstream success and celebrates its 20th year, churned out several of its hit tracks, including “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Hahaha Song,” as its fans sang along in tandem.
Gorillaz, the headliner for Jisan’s third and final day, electrified the crowd, doling out a number of the band’s electronic trip hop tracks, including “Ascension,” “Saturnz Barz” and “Sleeping Powder,” throughout the hourlong set.
Member Jamie Hewlett was absent due to being sick, but Daman Albarn was all over the stage. Albarn was also spotted amongst the crowd during the show, often fending off the security staff preventing him from joining the fans.
CJ E&M, the organizer of the festival, said earlier it expected a crowd of 90,000 to gather at this year’s three-day event. On Friday and Saturday, international musicians, such as Lorde, Major Lazer and Sigur Ros, along with local acts Nell, Lee Juck and Zico, performed at Jisan.
