SEOUL, July 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Science and ICT said Wednesday it had launched the first stage of commercialization of 5G roaming service in some farming and fishing villages.
The first stage of commercialization was launched in 149 eups (towns) and myeons (townships) in 22 cities and counties based on comprehensive consideration of the progress in network roll-out and communication quality.
The ministry formulated a rural 5G joint usage plan in April last year. Under this plan, the nation’s three major telecom operators have been engaged in the establishment of joint use networks for eups and myeons in 131 cities and counties on a gradual basis.
Originally, the first stage of commercialization was supposed to begin late this year and the third stage by the first half of 2024.
During a meeting held on July 11, however, Science Minister Lee Jong-ho and the CEOs of the three mobile carriers agreed to launch the commercialization during the month of July for the earlier established areas among the first-stage regions.
