SEOUL, Feb. 28 (Korea Bizwire)The government will designate six metropolitan cities and 43 local areas as trial special education zones as part of efforts to develop the regions, the presidential office said Wednesday.

The trial zones, which will include the cities of Busan, Daegu, Gwangju and Daejeon, will be eligible to receive between 3 billion and 10 billion won (US$7.5 million) in funding and have various regulations lifted to help them become “local outstanding education models,” Jang Sang-yoon, senior presidential secretary for social policy, said during a press briefing.

The zones will be run in cooperation between the local governments, education offices, universities and industrial bodies, with the central government providing support for their educational policies.

President Yoon Suk Yeol stressed the importance of the special zones during a recent townhall meeting in Busan, saying he will create a virtuous circle where locally nurtured talented people contribute to the local community.
