Gov’t to Foster 4 Major BT-ICT Fusion Technologies

SEOUL, Oct. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The government will actively nurture four major high-tech industry areas combining bio and information technologies such as mobile cardiopulmonary diagnostic devices, smart wheelchair, diagnostic and preventive technologies for Internet and game addiction, and bio implants.

Lee Jin-kyu, an official with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning in charge of R&D policy, said on October 5, “The government will keep expanding R&D support to those areas that are most wanting by the general public such as healthcare.”

He added, “In order to help domestic industries attain global-level competitiveness in bio health areas, the government will accelerate its effort in fusing the BT and ICT R&D outcomes. More specifically, our focus will be on disease correlation forecast, skin aging research, genome analysis including developmental disorders from rare incurable illness, and brain scanning technologies.”

According to policy direction for South Korea’s health care industry laid out by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, it plans to nurture the health care industry into a new growth engine for the Korean economy and help the public´s convenient access to health care by creating basic conditions where core elements of the health care industry can be utilized effectively.
