SEOUL, July 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has announced a plan to switch the desktop computers used by 623,000 civil servants working for various levels of government as well as public institutions to business laptops called “Onbook” by 2027 on a step-by-step basis.
Onbooks are laptops that civil servants and employees of public institutions can use while complying with security regulations, not only in the office but also when traveling or working from home.
Thus far, civil servants were not allowed to use laptops for work due to security concerns. Even at work, they needed to use two desktop computers – one connected to the Internet and another connected to an internal network.
To address this inconvenience, the ministry started developing the security-enhanced Onbook from August last year in collaboration with other government agencies and private companies, including the National Intelligence Service and the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The new Onbook features state-of-the-art security technology to prevent hacking and information leakage through malicious code. Encrypted storage space can be used only when security certification is passed.
