SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — Gyeonggi Province plans to install closed-circuit television cameras in all middle and high schools in the region by the end of 2021 to protect students from school violence and other criminal offenses.
Gyeonggi Province is South Korea’s most populous region and is home to 1,106 middle and high schools. Currently, only 31.8 percent of these schools have crime prevention CCTV cameras installed.
The new plan comes as part of Gyeonggi’s efforts to tackle the current situation where more than 5,000 criminal cases are being reported at school zones nationwide every year.
The province will invest 7.9 billion won (US$6.9 million) to install CCTV cameras at 90 schools each year to cover total of 360 schools by the end of 2021.
The cameras will be connected to an integrated control center to monitor critical locations in school zones during commuting hours to prevent crime as well as quickly respond to accidents.
