Half of S. Korean Adults Have Experienced Stress or Abuse Related to Financial Circumstances

SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Korea Bizwire)A recent survey has revealed that more than half of South Korean adults have experienced stress or abuse related to their financial situation.

Choi Chul, a professor at Sookmyung Women’s University, and Shin Sang-hee, a researcher at the Korea Financial Investors Protection Foundation, carried out a survey of 2,000 South Korean adults between 20 and 65 years of age.

Roughly 60 percent of the respondents said that they had experienced stress or abuse based on their financial circumstances.

Among respondents, 42.2 percent said that they had experienced stress and anxiety, followed by depression (23.2 percent), sleep disorders (15.7 percent) and difficulty concentrating or resting (14.5 percent).

Half of the respondents said that they had experienced a deficit on the household balance sheet, while 23.4 percent said that they had to take out a loan to cover living expenses in the past year.

In response to a question asking if they were able to save money, 82.4 percent said that they had put money into saving accounts more than two times over the past year, while 17.6 percent said were rarely able to set money aside for savings.
