SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Korea Bizwire)A South Korean company has been selected to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) staff officer that would provide analysis and statistical information for decision-making by military commanders.

Hanwha Systems Co., a solution provider for defense electronics, recently announced that it was selected as a prime negotiator by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) for the ‘intelligent battlefield recognition service and platform-service integrated technology’ project.

It will be the first project to completely incorporate AI technology into the military command system.

Including the development of the AI staff officer, the ADD is scheduled to spend 15 billion won (US$13.5 million) over the next four years to complete a comprehensive range of tasks aimed at establishing an AI-based command control intelligent information platform as well as developing battlefield recognition intellectualization technology.

Hanwha Systems will perform the role of integrating unit tasks, including the development of the intelligent battlefield recognition service, the realization of a big data and AI platform, and the creation of battlefield simulation data.

The intelligent battlefield recognition service collects various information and tactical data from a battlefield in real time and provides multiple analysis results to commanders through an AI learning model equipped with deep learning capabilities.

Based on statistics and analysis offered by the AI, commanders can recognize the situation more quickly and accurately.

“On the basis of the intelligent battlefield recognition system, we will incorporate AI into the entire process of command decision-making, aimed at completing the ‘AI-based command decision-making support system’ that can provide commanders with customized strategies,” Hanwha Systems said.
