SEOUL, Aug. 3 (Korea Bizwire)Korea finally turned from an importer to an exporter of meat products to the United States. Harim, Korea’s major chicken meat processor, announced on July 31 that, for the first one in the nation’s livestock industry, it now exports instant “Samgyetang,” Korea’s traditional dish also known as “Ginseng Chicken Soup,” to the United States.

The commencement of the export holds a significant meaning to Korea’s livestock industry and the government as the first case of livestock product exported to the United States. No other Korean livestock product has been authorized to be sold in the U.S.

The Samgyetang that will be exported overseas are instant products made in two types, a retort type and a speed-frozen type, for consumers to easily store and cook them, while maintaining the unique deep flavor of the dish. The price will be $8.90 for each package and will be sold in all across America.

The chicken meat exporter has set the goal to sell the product worth over $1 million and will initially target those areas where Korean-American population is high, and plans to extend its consumer base starting from targeting Japanese-Americans and Chinese-Americans who are relatively more familiar with the Korean cuisine.

The trailblazing company of Korea also is putting efforts in global marketing of Samgyetang as part of the “globalization strategy of Korean foods.” First, the company will open up a website for introducing the excellence in Samgyetang and Korean food culture. The website will introduce the origin, recipe and other information of the chicken soup in four different languages.

Furthermore, Harim will also hold various events for domestic consumers to mark the commencement of the export. Discount sales will be held for its instant Samgyetang products in August and “Harim Samgyetang Truck Event” which directly serves instant Samgyetang to those who are exhausted from summer heat will be continue till the end of the month.

An official in Harim said, “This export deal holds a tremendous meaning in that the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S., well known to be fastidious in screening imports, has acknowledged the excellence in quality and safety of our chicken meat. We hope to advance to major markets in the U.S., as well as Europe and the Middle East and make Samgyetang a globally-enjoyed dish.”
