SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Korea Bizwire) – A rather unexpected hazing ritual has taken place at a Korean university. Senior students from the Department of Dental Hygiene at Chung Cheong University in the city of Cheongju brushed and flossed clean, very gently, the teeth of freshman students on February 24. This special welcoming ceremony of oral hygiene care has been a departmental tradition over the past seven years, and was the first of its kind.
While hazing is a social problem in Korea, the department’s quirky ceremony definitely stands out for actually having a practical purpose. The department has produced about 500 dental hygienists since its opening in 2004.
