SEOUL, May 7 (Korea Bizwire) The trade union of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) exercised its right to stop working after a worker fell into a manhole due to lack of safety facilities.

On May 6, the trade union announced the work stoppage order to its workers for the first time. According to the union, a worker fell into a manhole on April 30.

After the accident, the union asked the company to reinforce safety measures, but no changes were made. In response to the company’s negligence, the union’s executive members stopped work at the scene.

After the stoppage, the union asked the company to remove the risk factor and to prepare countermeasures to prevent such similar accidents. Under these circumstances, the company should follow due process before work resumes.

The company and the trade union agreed to terms governing work stoppages under the 2014 collective agreement, which was signed by both sides earlier this year.

According to the agreement, once a safety accident occurs, the union can ask the company to take corrective measures. If the company does make appropriate changes, the union can exercise its work stoppage rights.
