Gangwon Province, March 21 (Korea Bizwire) – High school students in Gangwon Province’s Cheorwon County went viral on social media after making badges in commemoration of comfort women who were forced into sexual slavery by the imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War.

Fourteen students from Cheorwon High School’s history club “Jiphyeonjeon” and another history club “Ongojishin” from Cheorwon Girls’ High School teamed up to design, produce and sell comfort women badges all on their own.

The badges are shaped in the form of a young girl with a blue forget-me-not, which in the language of flowers has the meaning of memories, resembling comfort woman when they were young.

Having had experience selling silicon bracelets they purchased then donating the proceeds to charity in memory of ‘comfort women’, Cheorwon High School students came up with the idea of making badges on their won.

It was when Cheorwon High School students were met with difficulties designing the badge that they asked for help from students at Cheorwon Girl’s High School.

The news of the ‘comfort women’ badge spread quickly on social media even before they went on sale.

Due to soaring demand, the students had to increase production to 1,000 from the originally planned order of 200 badges.

Cheorwon student Lee Chan-hee, who participated in the making of the badges, said, “While working in a history club with an aim to correct revisionist history, we came up with the idea of ‘comfort women’ badges.”
