‘Home Café’ Gains Popularity amid COVID-19 Pandemic


SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Korea Bizwire)Home beverage makers are enjoying rising popularity in South Korea as the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic makes it difficult for people to visit cafes and restaurants.

According to the online shopping mall Gmarket, the sales of capsule coffee machines and espresso machines for the period from December 1 to 14 marked robust year to year growth of 115 percent and 52 percent, respectively.

Sales of sparkling water makers also jumped by 33 percent year on year.

Sales of capsule coffee and coffee beans rose by 48 percent and 19 percent, respectively, year on year, while sparking water sales grew by 37 percent.

During the same period, home beverage makers emerged as some of the top-selling items at home electronics shopping malls.

Lotte Himart, for example, saw the sales of coffee machines and sparkling water makers rise by 115 percent 106 percent, respectively, year on year. ET Land also reported 44 percent growth in sales of coffee machines.

“An increasing number of people make coffee and carbonated beverages at home instead of going to cafes,” said Lim Young-seok, an official at Lotte Himart.

“In addition, the number of people who make beverages at home as a kind of hobby is increasing, leading to an increase in sales of related items.”
