SEOUL, May 26 (Korea Bizwire) – A patent suit by China’s Huawei Technologies Co. against Samsung Electronics Co. is part of a “deft and sophisticated” strategy to raise its image as a global firm, a Korean government minister said on Thursday.

The Chinese tech giant has filed a suit against its Android smartphone rival Samsung with courts in the U.S. and China, arguing that the South Korean firm violated its patents including those on 4G mobile-related technology.

“Huawei seems to be framing it as a legal battle between global companies,” said Science, ICT and Future Planning Minister Yang Hee Choi. “I think it is part of a deft and sophisticated strategy,” he added.

To prove his point, Choi cited meetings with company officials late last year during his visit to a Huawei research center, during which the officials “…claimed Huawei is not just a Chinese company, boasting about having more labs abroad than in China, and achieving strong overseas sales.”

The minister said the suit should be a wakeup call for the South Korean government to bolster its intellectual property policy, and further stressed the need for stepping up efforts to protect South Korea’s intellectual property in the face of challenges from Chinese firms.
