SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Korea Bizwire)The state human rights watchdog called Monday for measures to relieve the digital alienation of seniors by providing customized training and introducing senior-friendly digital devices.

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) said it made the recommendation to the science minister earlier this month, calling for the introduction of digitalization training courses that reflect the preferences and demands of seniors, including at-home instruction.

It also recommended the government come up with guidelines requiring manufacturers to apply “universal designs” that all people find easy to use regardless of their age or disability.

“Elders not familiar with using digital devices can feel inconvenienced and isolated or alienated, especially with the increased use of mobile apps and kiosks in daily life after COVID-19,” the watchdog said in a statement.

A digital help desk and hotline service should be in place to help seniors at any time, the NHRCK added.

The human rights watchdog noted that relevant guidelines should be prescribed by law to ensure and support seniors’ access to digital information.
