SEOUL, Jul. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — Hwacheon’s famous tomato festival is back for the 15th time this year, with a host of interesting activities on tap including firework shows and singing contests, to be held over a period of four days starting next Friday.
Modeled after Spain’s famous tomato fight festival ‘La Tomatina’, Hwacheon’s tomato festival has been gaining popularity every year, with this year’s event scheduled to feature five different areas each operating under a different theme, ranging from the Tomato World Zone and Pia Zone to a Play Zone, Happy Zone and Market Zone.
At the Tomato World Zone, a string of performance events including fireworks shows and signing contests will be held to keep the crowd entertained, while a scavenger hunt with a tomato twist, which the event organizers call the highlight of the festival, will be held at the Tomato Pia Zone alongside other tomato-themed games, during which participants will look for a gold ring.
While sports events under the theme of tomatoes such as football matches and squirt gun fights will be held, a peace concert in celebration of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics is also set to take place.
Choi Moon-soon, the governor of Hwacheon County, said, “The Hwacheon Tomato Festival shows that a festival which centers around the people, and not the local government, will be successful.”
