ULSAN, Feb. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. said Thursday that it had developed a ship that prevents the spread of pandemics such as the coronavirus.
The new vessel comes with an airborne infection isolation room and a ventilation system that fulfills the guidelines set by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency to prevent the spread of viruses.
Normally used as ordinary cabins, these rooms can be transitioned into isolation rooms for efficiency.
The water distribution system for the isolation rooms makes use of facilities already in place to minimize cost.
In case of new visitors from land, separate offices and sanitary facilities have been set up to prevent contact with those onboard.
In addition, HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters have been installed on ventilators to better block the spread of any disease.
The Korean Register, the nation’s classification society for ships and offshore structures, has certified the vessel based on a series of tests that confirmed the vessel’s effectiveness against pandemics as well as its legal and technological adequacy.
