SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Korea Bizwire) — India opened up its second Korean language master’s program with the Korean wave sweeping the globe.
Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi recently held a faculty meeting to introduce the master’s program in the Korean language.
The university has selected 25 new students for the Korean language master’s program for the fall semester starting in October.
It is the second time for India to introduce a master’s program in the Korean language. Jawaharlal Nehru University introduced undergraduate and graduate programs for the Korean language in 1995 and 1998, respectively.
Jamia Millia Islamia University currently runs an undergraduate program for the Korean language and a year-long basic and intermediate Korean language course.
Last July, the university’s first batch of undergraduates majoring in the Korean language graduated. Professor Kim Do-young, a visiting professor at the Korea Foundation, is currently the Director of the Korean Studies at the university.
“Jamia University has confirmed the introduction of a master’s program in the Korean language, before French, Spanish and Chinese,” professor Kim said.
With the rising popularity of Korean content, Indians are gaining interest not only in K-pop, but also in K-dramas and the Korean language.
The Indian government introduced the Korean language into India’s school curriculum in July 2020 to reflect these trends.
