SEOUL, Korea, Nov 18 (Korea Bizwire) – A low-cost English learning solution has been made available by a start-up company called HeraReading. The company recently launched a “HELPS” (high-education low-price system) service by which it offers English teaching classes jointly with local community centers. As there is little overhead for running schools as the company makes use of existing classrooms at community centers and takes advantage of community bulletin boards and inserts for promotion, it can lower the monthly tuition as low as 70,000 won for twice-a-week lessons including textbooks.
In addition, HeraReading could reduce its expenses further by hiring locally available part-time teachers who are mothers or college students. Still the quality of its faculty members is as high as any top-class language schools, for it hires the teaching staff after a strict screening process.
HELPS will begin the pilot program in six communities in the Seoul metropolitan area, including the community centers of Geoyeo 1-dong, Ogeum, Galsan 2-dong, Geomdan 2-dong, Shingbong, and Naeson 1-dong, with plans for nationwide deployment from December this year beginning with communities requesting the service.
According to the company, HELPS is superior to any other English learning programs in that it strictly adheres to the principle of self-paced instruction. For example, a student must take classes at kindergarten level even though she is sixth grade and a kindergartener may take lessons for sixth-grade students if her level is commensurate with that.
One of the strengths of the program is that it allows the students to read books in class and at home, as many as six books a month, so that the children can improve their vocabulary and the ability to form sentences. The teachers constantly work with parents whether the children complete their homework and adjust levels whenever necessary.
Given that Korea’s parents spend fortune on English lessons for their children, as much as 6.4 trillion won (according to estimates by the Korea Development Institute) a year, this is an innovative solution to relieve the burden on them while enhancing the quality in cooperation with local communities who benefit directly from the service.
