SEOUL, March 9 (Korea Bizwire) – The 2015 Jeju Fire Festival, a popular festival in which farmland is burned to kill weeds, wrapped up on March 8, after four days and 63 programs that were designed to demonstrate Jeju’s traditional pastoral culture.
The grand burning, called ‘banggae,’ is a traditional agricultural and pastoral custom in Jeju. Farmers in Jeju have been setting fire to land from the late winter to early spring, to eradicate any harmful vermin and weeds. The festival has developed a custom of burning a 200,000㎡ site at the Saebyeol Oreum ridge located in a volcanic mountain.
In order to remember that the fires make way for new life, the festival also had a program in which 5,500 seedlings were shared with its visitors. Experience-based programs such as pony riding and promotional events for Jeju farm specialties added joy to the festival.
