JEJU, Sep. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – The natural landscape of Jeju Island has been recognized internationally once again, as the island is certified again as a “Global Geopark.”
Jeju Island was confirmed as a global geological park at the 6th International UNESCO Conference on Global Geoparks held in Stonehammer Geopark, Saint John, Canada, according to the Jeju Government.
The island maintains the UNESCO prestigious Triple Crown – a World Natural Heritage, a World Biosphere Reserve, and a Global Geopark –, which is unprecedented for the field of UNESCO natural science.
The residents should keep up their efforts to promote the sustainable development of Jeju Global Geopark. To this end, it is urgent that the provincial government should designate more places as a geological park, associate it with the residents’ earnings, and establish partnerships with organizations relevant to each other.
Furthermore, the government is also required to encourage and expand the residents’ participation, enhance educational programs, and proactively promote international exchanges among global geoparks.
“We will step up efforts to develop various exploration programs to contribute to the local economy and invigorate the geopark industry,” said an official in the Institute for World Heritage and Mt. Halla.
