SEOUL, July 12 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Science and ICT said Monday that it will launch a brain bank designation system to enable brain science researchers to make use of research resources.

The government stipulated details on the qualifications and procedures for the designation of brain banks and the management of brain research resources in the Brain Research Promotion Enforcement Ordinance resolved in the Cabinet meeting last month.

Under the revision of the enforcement ordinance, human biological material banks or other institutions that satisfy certain requirements among those allowed to provide human cadavers for research can be designated as brain banks.

Institutions that would like to be designated as brain banks should submit documents proving that they meet requirements in light of personnel and facilities, business plans, and letters of application to the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The ministry, thereafter, designates brain banks based on a review of the documents.

During the process of designating brain banks, the ministry plans to closely review whether or not the applicants have a life ethics committee and adequate guidelines and ethical principles for the management of brain research resources.
