JEJU, Oct. 13 (Korea Bizwire)Jeju Province is preparing for a new era of eco-friendly vehicles by announcing plans to ban the registration of all internal combustion engine vehicles in the southern resort island by 2030.

Jeju, along with the Jeju Provincial Council, announced Monday a New Deal Plan for Jeju that includes directives for the distribution of eco-friendly cars.

The plan involves an investment of 6.1 trillion won (US$5.3 billion) and is expected to create 44,000 new jobs by 2025.

The New Deal comes with a primary focus on green, digital, and safety net policies, containing 10 core tasks and 24 focus objectives.

Based on the New Deal, Jeju plans to invest 4.9 trillion won to create 30,784 jobs in the green industry.

Jeju also aims to lead low-carbon efforts by setting up systems to integrate energy management, promote eco-friendly values, and run projects on resource circulation.

The Green New Deal’s core tasks include designating special zones to lead the Green New Deal project, and laying infrastructures for the Green Way, a project to allocate eco-friendly transport vehicles at Jeju International Airport.

The plan also aims to turn small villages or apartment complexes into ‘renewable energy towns’ and regroup R&D and tourism complexes into renewable energy districts.

“We aim to free electricity from KEPCO’s monopoly by allowing local communities to autonomously generate clean electricity and put it up for sale,” said Jeju Gov. Won Hee-ryong.
