SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — A ship carrying the Joseon Tongsinsa, a diplomatic delegation sent by Korea’s Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) to Japan, set sail from Busan on Tuesday.
Restored by the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage in 2018, the ship arrived at Hitakatsu Port in Tsushima, Japan on the same day.
On Wednesday, the ship will travel to Izuhara Port for a temporary stay. The Tsushima city government will hold a special ceremony the following day to greet the entry of the Joseon Tongsinsa.
The restored ship weighs 149 tons, measuring 34.5 meters in length, 9.3 meters in width, and 5 meters in height, with a sail that rises up to 22 meters.
Historically, the Joseon Dynasty sent Tongsinsa in a total of 12 rounds from 1607 to 1811 upon Japan’s request, transferring traditional Korean medicine, Confucianism, painting and choreography.
