KEPCO Enforces Stringent Measures in Wake of Solar Power Controversy

SEOUL, Nov. 15 (Korea Bizwire) – On Tuesday, KEPCO announced its adoption of a one-strike policy, including the possibility of dismissal, in response to a swift investigation prompted by the National Audit Office.

The audit revealed that numerous employees had breached their non-competition obligations, engaging in the solar power business and fueling a fairness controversy. 

In an official statement following the audit’s release, KEPCO expressed its unequivocal acceptance of the findings and extended apologies to the public for the transgressions of some employees. 

The audit identified 251 employees across eight public organizations, including KEPCO, involved in the solar power sector, operating businesses improperly under their or their family members’ names.

Additionally, 64 local government officials with business ties were implicated, and instances were uncovered where Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy officials received preferential treatment and were subsequently reemployed by solar companies.

In response to these findings, KEPCO is actively pursuing further investigations, particularly targeting individuals suspected of holding dual jobs related to photovoltaics as highlighted by the auditors.

The company emphasized its commitment to implementing disadvantageous personnel measures, such as promotion restrictions and out-of-town transfers. 

Moreover, KEPCO has proposed a series of improvements aimed at eliminating secondary occupations, including family members connected to the solar power business. 

This includes the establishment of a Dual Occupation Reporting Center, regular surveys of all employees, and routine checks on the power plant assignments of disciplined employees.

As part of its ongoing efforts, KEPCO plans to launch a Compliance Management Team, a dedicated anti-corruption control tower reporting directly to the president, to bolster internal controls. The company also intends to persist in anti-corruption education initiatives to enhance employee awareness. 

Looking ahead, KEPCO noted that all employees were committed to upholding their responsibilities and providing a stable electricity supply. The company expressed sincere apologies to the public for any inconvenience caused.
