SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Korea Bizwire) — A Korean farm owner in Myanmar has been caught in a dispute between armed forces and rebels in the country.
The owner of a rubber tree farm in Myanmar’s Yangon region surnamed Kim, who goes by an alias, was forced to demolish two buildings at the farm on August 20. His staff was also evicted by force.
It is the first time for a Korean resident in Myanmar to fall victim to property damages from the military authorities.
Kim has been running the rubber tree farm for 10 years over 40,000 square meters of land. A group of armed soldiers turned up in a truck recently demanding that buildings and structures be torn down.
“They said they would burn everything if I didn’t demolish all of the buildings,” Kim said.
The Myanmarese military, fearful that these buildings might be used as hideouts for armed rebels, have visited more than 60 rubber tree farms in the area to tear down all structures.
The soldiers reportedly burned down structures at rubber tree farms where the owners rejected their demands to take them down.
