Korean Researchers Win Top Award for Modular Robotic Furniture System

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) announced on December 18 that its team, led by senior researcher Kwak Sona from the Intelligent Interaction Research Center, received the top award in the Innovative Prototype category at the International Conference on Social Robotics (ICSR).

Their winning entry, the oOoBOT, is a modular robotic furniture system designed to maximize space efficiency in compact living environments.

The oOoBOT, named to reflect its expandable and collapsible modular structure, can transform into various forms such as a table, chair, storage unit, or cart based on user needs. Its size and shape are fully adjustable, and it can be minimized for storage when not in use.

The system offers practical applications for diverse scenarios. For instance, elderly individuals can use it as a supportive chair, table, or mobility cart to transport items. In disaster relief settings, it can be easily assembled into beds or tables, providing versatile and portable solutions.

The ICSR, a leading conference in the field of social robotics, was held in Odense, Denmark, over four days starting October 23. Finalists in the design competition presented their prototypes during the event, where their innovation and practicality were assessed.

“We aim to provide innovative solutions for space utilization to diverse users, from young adults to single-person households,” said Kwak. “By focusing on resource efficiency and sustainable design, we hope to contribute to environmentally friendly living spaces.”

The recognition highlights the potential of modular robotic systems to revolutionize adaptable living solutions, particularly in urban and constrained environments.
