JEJU, Korea, August 09 (Korea Bizwire) – The 6th annual ‘Jeju Haenyeo Festival’ will be hosted at the Haenyeo Museum and adjacent seaside at Gujw Village on Jeju Island from October 12 to 13. This year’s festival, hosted by the Jeju Special Self-governing Province and organized by the ‘Committee for the Jeju Haenyeo Festival,’will be a unique female-centric festival celebrating maritime culture for Haenyeo (woman divers), the people of Jeju, and visitors alike.
This year’s festival, themed ‘Breath of Haenyeo Reaching across the Sea to the World,’ will focus on promoting the identity of Haenyeo culture and continuing the general spirit of the festival. Furthermore, other detailed events such as performances and hands-on experience programs that can contribute to preserving and passing down the community culture of Jeju women divers are being organized to ensure an interesting and fruitful event.
The ‘Jeju Haenyeo Festival’ is Korea’s only female-oriented festival celebrating maritime culture to preserve and pass on the Haenyeo culture full of the strong pioneer spirit of Jeju women. In addition, the festival is hosted annually to inspire pride among the woman divers, and to spread domestic and international consensus for the addition of ‘Haenyeo’ to the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.
