POHANG, Aug. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — A large car ferry that is scheduled to be deployed on the route between Pohang in North Gyeongsang Province and Ulleung Island has made its first public appearance.
Local cruise operator Ulleung Cruise’s brand-new car ferry New Shidao Pearl arrived at the terminal of Youngilman Port in Pohang on Wednesday afternoon.
The 11,515-ton passenger ship is capable of accommodating 1,200 passengers and 7,500 tons of cargo. After a trial run, the new car ferry will be deployed on the Ulleung Island-Pohang route from mid-September.
Thus far, car ferries that have served this route have not been able to operate on days when waves are high. The number of such days averaged at about 100 every year.
The New Shidao Pearl’s one-way trip on this route is expected to take six and a half hours, compared to three hours on existing ferries.
