SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Korea Bizwire) – Actress Lee Young-ae has been appointed to be a special envoy for the UNESCO Korean Commission, the commission said Tuesday.
Lee was recognized for her status as one of the top celebrities in the country and lead in donations and voluntary services, it said.
“We decided to work with her to promote the commission’s activities such as a fundraising and a campaign to render educational support to underdeveloped countries,” it said.

The 44-year-old actress was officially named to the post in a ceremony held in central Seoul Monday.
“As an actress and a mother of two children, I was greatly impressed by the commission’s ongoing activities to provide educational support,” she said during the ceremony. “I think it will be a special chance for me and I will be able to engage in many activities with UNESCO.”
Lee shot to Asianwide stardom in the 2003 smash-hit Korean epic series “Daejanggeum,” also known as “Jewel in the Palace,” which tells the tale of an orphaned cook who goes on to become the king’s first female physician.
She was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador in 2004 by UNICEF and has since held several charity functions. She has made many donations to schools and hospitals, including the Chosun First Middle School in Harbin and an elementary school in China that was thereafter renamed Lee Young-Ae Elementary School. In 2012, she donated money to help build a school in Myanmar.’
