SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Korea Bizwire) — LG Display and Hanwha Solutions have jointly developed eco-friendly cushioning packaging made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics, the companies announced on December 23, 2024. This new packaging is tailored for electronic components and aligns with global sustainability efforts.
The two firms collaborated over two years to achieve quality comparable to traditional packaging while using recycled materials. LG Display optimized the design and performance testing, while Hanwha Solutions handled raw material refining and processing through proprietary technology.
The packaging incorporates recycled plastics certified by Control Union with the Global Recycled Standard (GRS). Sourced from collected and recycled plastics, this material promotes resource circulation and significantly reduces carbon emissions.
By adopting the new packaging, LG Display is expected to cut annual carbon emissions by approximately 520 tons—equivalent to planting about 57,000 mature pine trees. Starting in January 2025, the packaging will first be used for automotive display panels, with plans to expand it to other product lines over time.
LG Display has been ramping up its sustainability initiatives, including its OLED TV panels, which use 90% less plastic compared to LCDs by eliminating backlight units. The company has also increased the use of ferrous materials, boosting product recyclability to 92.7%.
Since 2021, LG Display has implemented a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach to evaluate environmental impacts across a product’s lifecycle comprehensively.
Gwak Tae-hyung, Senior Vice President of Materials Research at LG Display, stated, “We are committed to minimizing environmental impact through sustainable material development, further advancing our ESG initiatives while delivering differentiated value to our customers.”
