SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Korea Bizwire) - South Korean panel maker LG Display Co. regained its status as the top seller of Ultra HD panels in the fourth quarter of 2015, industry data showed Thursday, amid the booming popularity of high-end TVs.
LG Display shipped 3.98 million units of UHD TV panels in the October-December period, up 10.5 percent from the previous quarter and accounting for 35 percent of the global UHD panel market, according to the data compiled by industry tracker IHS.
Another South Korean panel maker, Samsung Display Co., was relegated to the second spot with shipments of 2.79 million units, or a 25 percent share.
Samsung Display reigned supreme over the global UHD panel market in the first three quarters of last year but suffered a 24 percent drop in the fourth quarter, the data showed.
The two South Korean firms accounted for 60 percent of the global UHD TV market in the fourth quarter of last year.
The global shipments of UHD TV panels reached 11.25 million units in the fourth quarter, down 2.4 percent from the previous quarter.
Industry watchers said demand for UHD TVs is likely to further rise down the road because tech manufacturers are rolling out affordable models, making the products accessible to a larger scope of users.
Taiwan-based Innolux Corp. stood as the No. 3 player by selling 1.44 million units, followed by AU Optronics Corp. with 1.2 million units, according to the data.’
