SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Korea Bizwire) – LG Electronics has announced a strategic partnership with global automotive glass company Saint-Gobain Sekurit to introduce a cutting-edge transparent antenna for motor vehicles, a move signaling significant advancements in automotive communication technology. This innovative product will be showcased to automotive clients at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas this coming January.

The transparent antenna, a novel development in vehicle technology, is designed as a transparent film that can be applied to glass surfaces. It comes in two variations: on-glass (attachable) and in-glass (insertable), making it adaptable to a wide range of glass and automotive designs. This versatility marks a departure from traditional shark-fin antennas, offering greater scalability and customizable sizing according to the needs of automotive manufacturers.

LG Electronics highlights that this technology supports a range of communications, including 5G, satellite, and GPS systems, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity despite the increasing demands for data transmission. The antenna’s seamless integration into various vehicle glass surfaces enhances the vehicle’s aesthetic, allowing for smooth, uninterrupted lines and curves in the design. It is even applicable to glass roofs, adding functionality without compromising style.

LG Electronics secured over 80 patents during the development process, focusing on making the antenna pattern transparent and advancing transparent electrode material technology. This innovation is a testament to LG’s commitment to leading the market in vehicular communication components, including telematics.

According to LG’s own analysis based on data from market research firm Strategy Analytics, the company has secured the top position in the global telematics sector, boasting a market share of 23.8 percent in the third quarter of this year.

Thibault Heitz, head of Innovation and R&D at Saint-Gobain Sekurit, expressed enthusiasm about showcasing the smart glass equipped with LG’s transparent antenna technology at CES. He emphasized the importance of collaborating with LG Electronics, a leading player in the global automotive parts industry, to drive advancements in vehicle communications.

Eun Seokhyun, head of LG Electronics’ Vehicle Component Solutions Company, emphasized the significance of the partnership with Saint-Gobain Sekurit. He stated that the transparent antenna, rigorously tested and validated in actual vehicles, is a next-generation technology that has received recognition for its superior communication performance. “LG will continue to lead the market in the field of vehicular electronics, including telematics, through the continuous development and introduction of innovative technologies,” Eun added.
