SEOUL, May 18 (Korea Bizwire)LG Electronics Inc. announced on Wednesday its entry into the functional material industry by launching the production of antibacterial glass powder, a move aimed at securing new avenues for growth.

Leveraging its expertise in independent glass formulation and design technology, as well as its understanding of real-life usage scenarios for home electronics, the company has successfully developed an antibacterial glass powder.

Since last year, LG has been incorporating antibacterial glass powder into plastic components, such as handles, that are frequently touched by customers in various home electronic products, including refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners.

This initiative ensures hygienic usage of these products.

Additionally, LG has made advancements in the development of soluble glass, which effectively releases the antibacterial glass material.

When dissolved in water, this soluble glass transforms into inorganic ions, promoting the restoration of marine ecosystems by facilitating the growth of microalgae and seaweed.

LG initiated research on glass powder in 1996 and has since filed a total of 219 patents in this field.

Furthermore, the company operates a production facility with an annual capacity of 4,500 tons located in its Smart Park in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
