LG Smartphone’s Market Share Shrinks in S. Korea, N. America in 2018

SEOUL, Mar. 10 (Korea Bizwire)LG Electronics Inc. saw the market share of its smartphone shrink in both the South Korean and the North American markets in 2018, an industry report showed Sunday, as the tech firm is gearing up to release its new flagship smartphone, the G8 ThinQ.

The South Korean tech firm took up 14.3 percent of the local market in terms of shipments in 2018, down from 17.4 percent in 2017, easily being outpaced by its local rival Samsung Electronics Co. with 60.3 percent and Apple Inc. with 16.7 percent, according to the report released by industry tracker Strategy Analytics.

In the North American market, LG Electronics also came in third place, with a 15.9 percent market share in 2018, down from 16.9 percent a year earlier.

Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, improved its market share in the key North American market by moving up from 25.9 percent in 2017 to 26.5 percent in 2018, the latest findings showed.

LG said it will release the G8 ThinQ in South Korea and North America later this month and April, respectively.

G8 is the world’s first smartphone with advanced palm vein authentication, made possible by the combination of the ToF camera and infrared sensors.

It comes with Air Motion, which allows users to answer calls, switch between applications or adjust the volume without touching the phone.

LG said it plans to release its first 5G smartphone with a detachable secondary screen in the first half but didn’t specify its schedule or price range.
