SEOUL, Oct. 12 (Korea Bizwire)LG Uplus Corp., a major South Korean telecom operator, has announced the world’s first commercialization of a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF)-based Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) in collaboration with security solutions company ICTK Holdings.

PUF is a technology that prevents counterfeits or modifications using the difference in microstructure of semiconductors made in the manufacturing process.

This technology enables an ownership-based verification function that safely generates an encryption key by using a semiconductor fingerprint (inborn ID) and stores it in the memory.

LG Uplus stressed that if the newly-developed PUF USIM is installed in smartphones, it could contribute to strengthening the security of various financial and digital asset management services.

If users store their ID card, access card, car key, and performance ticket in the PUF USIM-based digital wallet, they can use them conveniently and safely without having to possess the real thing.
