SEOUL, May 14 (Korea Bizwire) — Most Koreans think that Korean teachers in the public education system are not respected by their students.
According to a survey conducted by Korea Gallup on 1,005 Koreans over 19 years from April 28 to 30, 83 percent of the polled individuals answered that they think teachers are not respected, while 9 percent answered they are.
Furthermore, 76 percent said they do not have any teachers to be thankful for on May 15, Korea’s Teacher’s Day. Of those who responded positively, 35 percent answered that their memorable teachers were from their elementary school days, while 20 percent and 15 percent picked their high school teachers and middle school teachers respectively.
Respondents over forty were more likely to have respect for their elementary school teachers, while younger respondents were fonder of their middle & high school teachers.
However, only 22 percent of the respondents actually went to see or phoned their teachers. The respondents in their twenties kept in touch with their teachers more than any other generation, as 39 percent of them spoke with one of their teachers recently, while older respondents were more likely to no longer be in touch with their teachers.
