SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Korea Bizwire)6 in 10 South Koreans prefer a virtual commute to work rather than going to an offline workplace, a survey showed Monday.

Seoul Women’s Resource Development Institute conducted an online survey of 4,476 people, 65.1 percent of whom (2,916 people) said they would opt for commuting to a virtual workspace through their avatars while 34.9 percent (1,560 people) preferred an offline workspace.

Sorted by gender, preference for virtual work was much higher among women (3,473 people) than men (1,003 people).

A majority of respondents preferred a virtual workspace because they can ‘take care of both work and homemaking’ (53.1 percent).

Others preferred a virtual workspace because they like to ‘engage in communication through avatars’ (19.9 percent) or because ‘virtual workspace sounds more convenient’ (17.4 percent).

Those who preferred an offline workplace said they like to engage in ‘face-to-face communication’ (41 percent).

They also believed avatars would limit their capabilities (27.5 percent) or ‘homemaking and other chores would get in the way of concentrating on work’ (19.8 percent).
