GAPYEONG, Jan. 5 (Korea Bizwire) – The very first ‘music city’ in South Korea is set to open in Gapyeong County next January, hosting studio spaces, concert halls and lodging for artists and music fans.
According to the government of Gapyeong country on Friday, the new project for South Korea’s very first music village will be built on 38,000 square meters of land previously occupied by the old Gapyeong train station.
The 40 billion won project will see a large-scale music-themed village built, which will be filled with music, shopping, accommodations and community facilities to attract musicians and music fans from across the country.
When complete, artists will be able to showcase their creative talents and give performances, while visitors will be able to enjoy various concerts throughout the year.
As the name suggest, artists will be able to record, practice, and perform at Music Zone, where education facilities and a cinema are also scheduled to be built.
A four-story music center will take center stage, occupying over 3,300 square meters of land and featuring a concert hall with seating capacity for 254, theaters, and lecture halls.
A three-story guesthouse will also be built, with 19 rooms accommodating up to 72 people, while restaurants, souvenir shops, and markets will welcome music fans.
With the annual Jarasum International Jazz Festival taking place nearby, local government officials are hopeful that both the music village and one of the biggest jazz festivals in Asia will have a synergy effect and lead to a positive impact on the local economy.
Governor Kim Sung-ki is hopeful that the new project will vitalize the county.
“The cultural multi-complex which incorporates music and business will replace the Gyeongchun Line railway station which has divided the town.
“Gapyeong will become a comforting holiday spot that people want to visit again,” Kim said.
Another urban project called ‘Coffee Roasting Campus’ is also set to open in Gapyeong later this year.
The joint project between coffee company De Black and international coffee consulting firm Coffee Core Asia will see the world’s biggest coffee school open in Misari in Gapyeong County in May.
