SEOUL, March 29 (Korea Bizwire) – North Korean football officials arrived in South Korea on Thursday to attend a meeting on regional football issues.
Four North Koreans, including East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) Vice President Han Un-gyong, landed at Gimhae International Airport in Busan after taking a flight via Beijing.
This is the first time since October 2014 that North Korean football officials have come to South Korea.
The North Koreans came to the southern port city to attend the EAFF executive committee meeting and its congress on Friday. They are scheduled to fly back to North Korea on Saturday.
“North Korea is one of the 10 EAFF members, so they came here to serve their roles,” an official with the Korea Football Association (KFA) said. “Inter-Korean football exchange is not on the meeting’s agenda, but since KFA President Chung Mong-gyu also chairs the EAFF, such an issue could be discussed separately.”
South Korea will host the 2019 EAFF E-1 Football Championship according to the rotational system of hosting the four-nation tournament. The E-1 Football Championship, previously known as the East Asian Cup, started in 2003. It’s a four team round-robin tournament held every two or three years.
