National Fire Agency Releases Pet First-aid Videos

SEOUL, Jun. 7 (Korea Bizwire)The National Fire Agency (NFA) announced on Thursday that it will produce and distribute educational videos on how to provide first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to companion animals in critical situations due to fire and other disasters.

The first aid video for pets is about eight minutes long and consists of a fire department official and a veterinarian demonstrating first aid with a hands-on model.

How to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on pets such as dogs and cats, the Heimlich method to remove foreign substances when an airway is blocked due to food stuck in the throat, and the act of first aid is shown step by step so that it can be easily followed in case of burns, fractures, seizures, and cramps.

The pet first aid videos can be viewed through the NFA’s YouTube channel and on its official blog.

The NFA also plans to produce and distribute versions of the videos that include sign language for the hearing-impaired, and to produce additional content to make pet first aid more accessible to citizens, with distribution expected for later this month .

A spokesman for the NFA, Cho Seon-ho, reported that the basic principle of emergency treatment is the same, but the physical and structural characteristics of humans and animals are different, so pet owners should learn first aid specifically for pets.
