SEOUL, Feb. 28 (Korea Bizwire) — Nearly 6 out of 10 South Koreans support impeaching President Yoon Suk Yeol over his short-lived martial law declaration, a survey showed Friday, as the Constitutional Court began deliberations to decide whether to formally remove him from office or reinstate him.
According to the survey conducted by Gallup on 1,000 adults aged over 18 from Tuesday to Thursday, 59 percent said they supported Yoon’s impeachment, down 1 percentage point from a week earlier.
Thirty-five percent of the respondents said they were against Yoon’s impeachment.
By party, 97 percent of supporters of the main opposition Democratic Party favored his impeachment, while 84 percent from the ruling People Power Party supporters opposed the impeachment.
“Among those in their 20s to 50s, 6 to 7 out of 10 supported the impeachment, while those in their 60s were evenly split,” the pollster said. “Only among those aged 70 and older, a majority of 58 percent were against the impeachment.”
The court is expected to deliver its verdict on whether to remove Yoon from office or reinstate him around mid-March.
If he is ousted, the country will be required to hold a snap presidential within 60 days. If reinstated, he will serve out the remainder of his term through May 2027.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
