SEOUL, Feb. 8 (Korea Bizwire)An innovative membrane that can convert industrial wastewater into drinking water as well as produce electricity has been developed by South Korean scientists.

Researchers from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and Myongji University announced on Tuesday that they had developed a new membrane that can purify a variety of water sources such as wastewater and polluted water, sea water and underground water as well as ensure the continuous production of electricity.

The research team integrated the water-purifying porous filter membrane with a conductive polymer in a sandwich structure.

The water that passes through the membrane is purified, and, at the same time, after wetting the membrane, the water can be used to produce electricity through a reaction with the conductive polymer.

The membrane can remove 95 percent of pollutants with a size of 10 nanometers, and can also produce electricity for more than three hours only with 10 microliters of water.

By using a solution printing process, the membrane can be made as large as required, and the time needed to make the membrane was greatly reduced, thereby raising the potential for commercialization.
