SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — New technology developed by Korean researchers can 3D-scan a livestock pig to measure its weight.
The Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture, and Forestry said Wednesday that Illuvation, an ICT startup sponsored by the institute, has developed the said technology.
Traditionally, pigs had to be placed on a stationary scale one at a time to measure their weight.
Now, the new ‘contactless mobile pig weight manager’ can simply scan a pig in 3D, making use of a specialized algorithm to calculate the pig’s weight in less than 10 seconds with more than 95 percent accuracy.
The new technology is capable of measuring a pig’s weight 60 times faster than traditional methods.
Illuvation said that using the new weight manager has increased the chance of identifying grade 1 pigs by approximately 14 percentage points compared to before.
The quick and efficient weight-measuring will expedite the pig’s shipping process, which will save up to 10 percent and 4 percent of the pig farm’s annual feeding and management cost, respectively.
