SEOUL, Feb. 28 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Employment and Labor said Monday it will issue a legislative notice on a partial amendment of the enforcement ordinance to increase the number of labor providers benefiting under the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act from the current 800,000 to more than 1.7 million.

Under the revision of the relevant law in May last year, workers in special employment types and platform workers became eligible for occupational accident compensation insurance for injuries suffered during work hours.

The enforcement ordinance for which the legislative notice will be issued concretizes the scope of labor providers benefiting from insurance and establishes a new application and collection system as well as a compensation and payment system.

Previously, the number of jobs eligible for occupational health and safety insurance stood at 16, including life planners, construction machinery operators, and parcel delivery workers.

Starting from July 1, some existing job types are integrated and tour guides and school bus drivers are added, with the total number of job types eligible for the insurance rising to 18.

The burden of insurance premiums will be shared on a 50:50 basis between labor providers and business owners.

The insurance premium will be calculated by multiplying the rate of the job concerned (notified by the ministry) on the basis of the labor providers’ actual incomes.

When labor providers take days off due to occupational accidents, 70 percent of their average wages will be paid as incapacity benefits.
